Change Cost Code Description at the Project Level
Objective
To change cost code descriptions at the project level.
Background
When a new project is created in Procore, it inherits its cost codes (e.g. 200 Metal Joists) from the Company level. However, project managers may want to change the description of a cost code to use a more project-specific label (e.g. 200 Metal Joists and Bearers) to prevent confusion around which cost codes should be used on a project.
Things to Consider
- Required User Permissions:
- To edit project cost codes:
- 'Admin' on the project's Admin tool.
OR - 'Read Only' or 'Standard' permissions on the project's Admin tool with the 'Manage Cost Codes' granular permission enabled on your permission template.
- 'Admin' on the project's Admin tool.
- To edit project cost codes:
- Additional Information:
- When you create a new project, it inherits its cost codes from the Company level. Any future changes to cost codes at the Company level are not automatically applied to the Project level.
- For cost codes that are inherited from the Company level, you can only change the description of a cost code at the Project level; you cannot change the cost code number. However, if you create a new project-specific cost code at the Project level (denoted with blue text), you can change both the cost code number and description.
Steps
- Navigate to the Project level Admin tool.
- Under 'Project Settings', click Cost Codes.
- Select a cost code in the Project Cost Codes list.
- Click Edit.
- Enter a new description.
- Click Update.
- Verify the change.
